What Is Drift Hunters?

Released in February 2017 by Studionum43, Drift Hunters is a 3D drifting game with no lap times and no rivals to beat - the only thing being scored is your drift. Break traction on the way into a corner, hold the slide with the throttle and a bit of opposite lock, and the multiplier climbs for as long as you keep the angle. Straighten out or spin and the run banks whatever you earned.

Those points are money. They buy new cars and they buy parts: engine, turbo, gearbox, brakes and weight, plus paint and rims if you care how the thing looks. Because the upgrades are mechanical rather than cosmetic, a car set up for tight technical corners genuinely feels different on a long sweeping track - which is why most players end up with a favourite car and a favourite map rather than the most expensive of each.

How to Play Drift Hunters

Controls

• W / S or Up / Down arrows - throttle and brake
• A / D or Left / Right arrows - steer, and hold the opposite lock through a slide
• Space - handbrake, the usual way to start a drift
• Left Shift / Left Ctrl - shift up and down a gear
• C - change the camera angle

Entering a drift is the easy half. Holding one is a constant balance between throttle and steering: too much gas spins the car, too little straightens it and ends the combo. The score counter shows your current angle-based multiplier, so you can see live whether the line you are taking is worth anything.

Tips to Score Bigger Drifts

• Enter slow, exit fast. A drift begun too quickly is a spin. Set the angle early at a modest speed, then feed in the throttle as the car settles.
• Stay in second or third. The lower gears keep the rear wheels spinning where you want them; a high gear at low revs simply grips and kills the slide.
• Handbrake to start, throttle to hold. Pulling the handbrake mid-drift scrubs speed and usually ends the combo - after the initial flick it is a throttle game.
• Link corners instead of resetting. The multiplier keeps climbing while you stay sideways, so a whole lap of connected drifts is worth far more than four clean single corners.
• Spend on the engine last. Grip, weight and gearbox make a car controllable; raw power on a car you cannot hold sideways just makes the spins faster.
