Chaining a slide into a jump off a curved surface tends to launch you further than a standing jump from the same spot, and levels are built with that momentum transfer in mind, several shortcuts and hidden squiggle stashes are only reachable if you're already carrying speed into them. Enemies are placed more as obstacles to bounce off or dodge mid-run than threats to stop and fight, so treating an encounter as a speed bump rather than a battle usually keeps a run's flow intact.
