Because each round escalates in difficulty, spending early earnings on defensive or evasive items rather than saving for a single expensive weapon tends to keep a run alive longer, surviving to bank more money matters more than any one round's outcome. Picking up a baseball bat is worth the detour when the teacher's attention is elsewhere, but rarely worth the risk of crossing her direct line of sight to reach it.
