Because weapons spawn on a timer at fixed points, learning an arena's spawn locations tends to matter as much as driving skill, controlling a strong weapon spawn gives a real edge over chasing whichever rival is currently closest. Using the arena's boost pads and hazards to disrupt an opponent's aim rather than driving in a straight line makes you a harder target while still keeping your own shots lined up.
