Because gear unlocks progressively, testing a new weapon against an easier wave before relying on it in a boss fight tends to avoid discovering its weaknesses at the worst possible moment. Keeping a mix of a wide-spread weapon for crowds and a focused, high-damage option for bosses in your loadout usually covers both scenarios better than optimizing entirely for one.
