Because ricochets stay live for a while, firing at an angle to bank a shot around a wall rather than only taking direct shots tends to catch opponents hiding just out of straight sightlines. Tracking your own shot's remaining bounce path matters as much as watching for an opponent's, since driving back into a corridor your own shell is still traveling through is a common, avoidable way to lose a round.
