Hello Neighbor

How to Play Hello Neighbor ?

The house across the street looks ordinary from the sidewalk: blue roof, stone walls, a white picket fence and a front door with a peephole. That is exactly why it is so suspicious. Hello Neighbor puts you on that quiet suburban block with one goal that keeps growing as you play — get inside, find out what the man next door is hiding, and do it without him catching you. It is a first-person stealth puzzle in bright cartoon 3D, and it plays more like a careful burglary than a horror chase, at least until the neighbor hears you.

Starting Out on the Street

A new game drops you on the pavement in front of the house, with a police officer strolling past and a small map tucked into the upper-left corner showing the road loop, the yards and the buildings around you. Nothing tells you where to go except the Tasks board. Press Tab (or click the light-bulb button) and it opens a short list of what to do next. The very first entries are simple: open the gate to enter the neighbor's yard and greet the vendor, Mr. Cao. Those small errands teach you how the world works before the real break-in begins, and they are worth doing in order because later tasks build on them.

Keys for Sneaking Around

  • W, A, S, D – walk; the mouse turns your head.
  • E – grab, open or use whatever is in front of you (gates, doors, items).
  • Q – drop what you are holding.
  • R – throw the held item, handy for knocking things down or making a distraction.
  • C – crouch, Space – jump.
  • Tab – open the task journal; hold Shift to free the cursor and click on-screen buttons.

The same actions also show up as round icons along the right edge, so you can play with a mouse or a touch screen as well as the keyboard.

Noise Is the Real Enemy

The game says it plainly the first time you sprint across the lawn: while running, the noise from your steps is stronger. An ear icon pulses when you are being loud. That one rule shapes everything. Running gets you across an open yard faster, but it also tells the neighbor exactly where you are. Walking slowly, and crouching behind fences, hedges and the porch railing, keeps you off his radar. Good runs in Hello Neighbor feel quiet and deliberate: you peek around a corner, wait for footsteps to fade, then cross the gap in one smooth move.

Thrown objects are your other tool. A bottle or box tossed with R makes a sound where it lands, which can pull attention away from the door you actually want. Since you can only carry one thing at a time, think about what you pick up — a key you need later is more valuable than a random can.

Reading the House Like a Puzzle

Once you are through the gate, the house becomes a puzzle box. Doors are locked, windows are high, and the porch, the garden and the side of the building each hide pieces of a route inside. Look for things you can stack or climb, objects that do not belong, and spots the neighbor walks past often. The minimap helps you keep track of where you are around the building, and the task board updates as you finish each step, so if you feel stuck the answer is usually "check Tab and look again at the last area it mentioned".

It helps to treat each attempt as scouting. On your first visit, just learn the layout: where the gate is, which side of the house is quiet, where the porch steps lead. On the next visit, you can move with purpose. Players who rush straight to the front door usually get caught on the porch; players who circle the yard first usually find a smarter way in.

Tips for Not Getting Caught

  • Walk, do not run, whenever the neighbor might be close. Save sprinting for wide open stretches you have already checked.
  • Use C to crouch behind low fences and furniture; it makes you smaller and quieter.
  • Throw something to the far side of the yard before you try a door, then move while he goes to look.
  • Use Continue from the main menu to pick up where you left off instead of starting a new game.
  • If a task seems impossible, finish the small errands first — talking to people like Mr. Cao often unlocks the next step.

If You Like Sneaking Around Creepy Houses

Hello Neighbor sits nicely next to the other stealth and escape games on the site. Granny and Granny 3 flip the idea around — you are locked inside and have to sneak out. Scary Teacher 3D has the same prank-and-hide energy in a house full of traps, and That's Not My Neighbor is a very different, paperwork-style take on suspicious neighbors. If you want something lighter between sneaking sessions, Baldi's Basics is another chase game where staying quiet matters more than speed.
