Because newly unlocked abilities often have distinct recovery windows, testing one against a weaker opponent before relying on it in a harder fight tends to avoid getting punished by an unfamiliar cooldown. Reading an opponent's attack pattern for an opening rather than trading blows aggressively usually wins duels more consistently than a purely offensive approach.
